Gran Canaria is a funny place, great weather, great people, cheap groceries. But, the air quality at this time of year is horrendous, due to the winds coming over from the Sahara, it’s full of dust and sand. Very quickly, breathing can become difficult, noses get blocked and the coughing starts. So, maybe not the best for asthmatics, or COPD sufferers. However, I loved my time there, my first visit to Gran Canaria in 8 years, I was welcomed with open arms. I stayed in the Columbus Rooftop Hostel, staffed by some incredible international volunteers. The Aussie manager was excellent, dealing with any issues quickly and effectively. Free waffles were offered Wed-Sun, so delicious fresh food completely free of charge. We did family dinner one night, which was a fantastic lentil stew, a small fee of 4 euros was charged to cover the cost of ingredients. With a resident flamenco musician, there was always a great ambience, good vibes only. I would highly recommend Columbus to anyone, especially solo travellers.
The Hiper Dino was my favourite supermarket as it contained a fish counter, a butchers, a bakers and even a candlestick makers! I made one of those up… But, a full gamut of fresh produce isn’t to be sniffed at, unless that’s how you select your food. Please enjoy responsibly though, as low price alcohol can be very dangerous, but at least the food is sometimes healthy.
I will write a longer post, fully reviewing my experience in Gran Canaria, but I just wanted to check in before I get my head down.
